We have an aspirational curriculum centred around the National Curriculum and the academic English Baccalaureate pathway, which at least 70% of pupils currently take. This core offer is complimented by an extensive arts offer, including Music, Drama, Art & Design, as well as Sport, Computing, Citizenship, DT and Religious Studies.

We broaden pupils’ experiences through our enrichment curriculum. This includes a ranges from debating to leatherwork, music instrument lessons.

Pupils are assessed three times a year with formal end of year assessments taking place in the hall. Reports are sent home following each assessment and parents’ evenings and engagement opportunities run throughout the year to discuss your child’s progress and how you can support them.

The school takes a blended approach to ability grouping. Our setting arrangements are informed by research into what works best for pupils in each subject and learning phase. This means we set by ability in mathematics from year 7 to 11, while English is taught in mixed ability groups in year 7-8, then ability groups from year 9. In science, pupils are taught in mixed ability groups in year 7, and then in ability groups from year 8-11. Groupings are reviewed after each assessment to ensure that pupils are in the group that best suits their learning.

The Charter School Bermondsey is working towards joining The Charter School Bermondseys Educational Trust, which may have a small impact on the logo on our uniform. While we finalise this, we ask that you do not purchase any uniform at the moment.
We use an online supplier, Price and Buckland, to make sure that all of our required uniform is affordable.

Pupils wear grey trousers or grey/blue checked skirt, a white shirt, a The Charter School Bermondsey blazer and a The Charter School Bermondsey tie. The blue checked skirt, PE top and school blazer are all available to purchase from Price and Buckland. You can find out all about our uniform here.

The school believes that excellent standards of behaviour build a solid foundation for academic success. Our Behaviour for Learning booklet sets out our high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and attendance that parents are required to reinforce.

From September 2022, the school day will start at 8:40 with Learning Family Time. Gates will open at 8:15 for those attending breakfast club and at 8:30 for others. For pupils in year 7-9, school is likely to finish at 3:30 on Monday to Thursday and at 2:35 Friday.

Breakfast club runs each day from 8:15-8:30 with free elements such as toast, and paid elements such as cooked food. Pupils can enjoy a range of healthy breakfast cereals, toast and toppings as well as fresh fruit.

At morning break, fresh fruit is available free of charge, alongside some purchasable hot and cold snacks.

At lunch, our canteen provides a range of hot and cold lunches.

We do not allow packed lunches and would ask that you contact the school if your child has any dietary needs to discuss this further.

Each year group has a dedicated Head of Year and a team of Learning Family Tutors (LFTs). Your child’s LFT will be the person that they see every morning for registration, the person who will make sure that they are equipped and ready for the day ahead! LFTs keep a close eye on their pupils, monitoring their attendance, attainment and wellbeing. They should be the first point of contact if there is anything you wish to discuss.

Our enrichment programme aims to encourage pupils to explore their potential by trying new and varied experiences such as debating, leatherwork, creative writing additional sports and the arts. The school uses the ClassCharts app for its communication platform. This means, you can access all communications and information about your child’s behaviour and attendance direct from your mobile device.

Your child’s Learning Family Tutor (LFT) is the first point of contact. They can help with any questions that you might have or will be able to put you in touch with the right person. You can message them and other school staff including subject teachers via the ClassCharts app.

Letters and messages are sent frequently to keep your informed about key events, updates and activities.

The school also sends out a weekly Community Bulletin and a termly newsletter Our Journey.

Our brand new, state-of-the-art new building is located just next door to our current site and on-track to be completed in June. Your children will be the first group to start their learning journey in the new building and we are so excited to be able to invite you to our grand opening in July.
