Year 11 EAL Students Explore Post‑16 Options at Southwark College

On 4 February 2026, a small group of Year 11 EAL students took part in an Open Evening at Southwark College, supported by Miss Anna Chiliquinga and Miss He.

Students were supported during registration, with translation provided in their first languages to ensure they fully understood all information shared.

During the visit, students learned about entry requirements, course expectations and the different pathways available after Year 11. They met with the Head of ESOL for Young People to discuss tailored support and progression routes, and also spoke with the Head of Science to explore subject-specific opportunities. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the college, allowing students to familiarise themselves with the facilities and learning environment.

The experience had a positive impact on the group. Students left with a clearer understanding of what colleges expect and felt more confident, supported by translation and targeted guidance. Meeting college staff helped them practise communicating with professionals, while learning about ESOL and science pathways broadened their awareness of the options available. The tour also helped reduce anxiety by making the college environment feel familiar and welcoming.

This was the second year that such a visit has taken place, and the benefits are already clear. Following last year’s trip, five EAL students chose to enrol at Southwark College. The school strongly recommends making these visits a regular part of support for EAL students and their families. For many who are new to the UK, the post-16 education system can feel unfamiliar. Opportunities like this, where translation is offered and college staff are available to answer questions, ensure equal access to information, build confidence, and help families make informed decisions about future pathways.
