Prize-Winning Art Kicks of Black History Month

Charter Bermondsey is celebrating Year 10 student Shamma, whose self-portrait has won a prize in the "All Our Histories" Art Competition.

Young people took centre stage at the launch of "All Our Histories" at Camberwell Library on Wednesday Evening. Celebrating a project that gives teachers and pupils a local lens through which to investigate the global history and legacies of enslavement.

Congratulations to Shamma in Year 10, whose artwork, Self Portrait 2026, created using oils on paper, was awarded a prize in the "All Our Histories Art Competition" in collaboration with the Southwark Schools' Learning Partnership.

A fantastic achievement and a wonderful example of our students' scholarly prowess and sharing their creativity beyond the classroom.

At the heart of the project is Camberwell-based international artist, Sokari Douglas' series of sculptures, titled "All the World is Now Richer".

The six larger-than-life steel figures take the story from Africa’s rich ancestral life through enslavement and resistance to the present day, recognising the bravery, dignity and strength of people who endured enslavement and fought for freedom. Pupils then made the history their own through an art competition.
