Curriculum Intent

The practice of drama and the production of theatre develop students' self-confidence, sense of identity, and enable them to take their place in the world. Our curriculum is designed to create a safe and secure learning environment where students can explore their identity, imagination, and culture. By understanding what it means to be a performer, theatre maker, and critic, students engage with a diverse variety of texts, using them as inspiration to create their own dramatic pieces. They will learn to think critically and reflectively, acquiring the language required to help others improve their performance.

Key Stage 3

Taught through 1 x 55-minute period each week, students encounter a blend of theatre traditions and genres, including Greek Myth, Comedy, Shakespeare, Naturalism, and Epic Theatre. Our approach integrates English and History, enriching their emotional, academic, and creative development. For instance, students explore the lives of Victorian children and Greek Myth at the start of Year 7. As theatre makers, they create devised work and study scripts, developing their critical and objective writing skills.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, taught through 3 x 55-minute periods each week, students continue their journey as theatre makers and critics, working with theatre professionals to stage practical components of the AQA GCSE course. They focus on devising theatre, performing, and writing about plays and performances. The devising unit allows students to focus on various elements such as acting, costume, lighting, sound, or set design as they create their unique responses to prescribed stimuli. They explore the techniques of theatre practitioners such as Stanislavski, Brecht, and Mitchell, and gain firsthand experience by attending live performances.
